AREAS OF INTERVENTION

  1. i)                    Relief Material Distribution: The department has distributed relief materials worth Rs ….. lacs in the flood affected areas and also in the relief camps of Saharsa, Madhepura and Supaul districts. The distribution is based on the need assessment done by the volunteers of the department. The distribution is being done after an extensive need assessment is done and the tarhet populations include:
v  Elderly persons
  1. v  Pregnant women
  2. v  Lactating Mothers
  3. v  Children
  4. v  Persons with Disability

 ii)                  Mobile Medical Services: The teams from the department in association with the doctors have operationalized mobile medical teams in Majhouva, Madhepura and Pattarghat in Sonbarsa which is treating patients in the remote parts of the area and also handling critical health issues and medical emergencies.

  iii)                HAMARI PATHSALA (Our School): To ensure continuity of education and spread awareness the department is running a school on the embankment in Dapharka in Bhutahi Baandh which is attended by the children of the villages settled in there. Using the concepts of LEARN with FUN the children are being imparted basic education and made to understand the how to prevent diseases and maintain health and hygiene.

  iv)                HAMARA HASPATAL (Our Hospital): The department to tackle the menace of communicable and water borne diseases has started a hospital in Bhutahi BAndh, Supaul distrct and Jirwa Mor, Saharsa district with the objectives of- immediate interventions with the rescued victims, treat common ailments and provide primary health care. The hospital is catering to the needs of more than 400 persons with special focus on the health needs of the pregnant women, lactating mothers, children and elderly.

  v)                  Maternal and Child Health:  This is another major area of focus and the team members have designed interventions based on door to door survey followed by participatory exercises.  Pregnant women, lactating mothers, infants and children are being acquainted with the various aspects of health care.

  vi)                Psycho-social counselling: The volunteers are providing counselling services to the victims and helping them overcome the personal losses.

 vii)              Management of Relief Camps: The team is assisting the locals in Saharsa, Madhepura and Supaul in the management of the relief camps and organizing awareness camps on issue of health.

viii)            Damage Assessment: The team is trying to gauge the impact of the disaster based on various parameters. This also includes the impact on livestock and ecosystem.

  ix)                Community Building Process: To enable the victims to take hold of their lives after we withdraw from there the volunteers are empowering locals to take ownership of the interventions taken up so far. The local educated youth has taken up teaching in the school and women groups have been formed for generating awareness.

x)                  Networking: The department faculty is constantly in touch with the state and district administration. It is playing a vital role in providing necessary inputs to the state based on the field work by the volunteers of the team.

Tata School of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai has also collaborated with the department in the various relief operations in the flood affected districts of Bihar .
